The Pete Cenarrusa Collection at Boise State
University documents the life and career of one of Idaho's most influential
statesmen of the second half of the 20th century. Born in Carey, Idaho, in
1917, he was first elected to the Idaho House of Representatives in 1950 as a
Republican and
served as its speaker from 1963 until 1967, when he was appointed Idaho
Secretary of State. Elected in his own right in 1970, he was reelected
seven times before retiring in 2002, after fifty-two years of uninterrupted
public service. The son of immigrants from the Basque provinces of Spain, Cenarrusa was an active participant in Basque-American cultural affairs and
became a leading international advocate for the Basque people and for peace in
that land. In 2004 he began transferring his political and personal papers
to Boise State University. The first part of that vast collection, his
Basque papers, have been cataloged and are now open for research. A
finding aid
is available online. For information about the Pete Cenarrusa
Collection, contact the Special Collections Department in Albertsons Library.
