Help Pages Within the database. For database specific information, select the Help icon to the right of the database name or databases drop-down list. For general EBSCO database help, select the top right-hand corner Help link.
Boolean Yes, AND, OR, and NOT logical operators; ( ) Information within parentheses is read first, then information outside parentheses is read next, e.g.(mouse OR rat) AND trap.
Truncation Symbol Use * (asterisk) to truncate, e.g. child* retrieves child, children, children’s, childhood, childlike, etc.
Use ? (question mark) to replace an unknown character, e.g. wom?n retrieves women, woman, or womyn.
Singular form of a word automatically includes a search for the plural form.
Proximity operators, Near or Within and a number, find search term occurrences that permit intervening words. Their use is explained in the general Help linked at the top right-hand corner of the screen.
Other Search Options Basic Keyword Search.
Advanced Search – provides multi-text boxes with guided Boolean and search field options.
Browse – using the Indexes link, browse, select, and add from author, document type, geographic term, ISBN, ISSN, language, publication name, subject term, and year of publication lists to build your statement.
Alerts Save searches; Create alerts via email or RSS.
Special Notes Phrase searching is the default for a two or more word search (within a single box). Use Boolean logical operators between words or select “Automatically "And" search terms” under the Refine Search tab to control word relationship.
List of Journals For Source Publications, go to Indexes. Select “Publication Name” in the drop-down list, then Browse. For a list of journals and other serials, select “Document Type” then type “serial,” check mark, add, and search. Sort by source for alphabetized list.
