Collection Organization

The Hollenbaugh Map Collection is currently undergoing some significant changes in both organization and accessibility. This collection has always been a distinct collection in the Library and, as such, had it own card catalog. However, maps are now being cataloged and integrated into the Library's online catalog. This project should take some time for completion; and, until that date, users need to search two ways in order to insure that all desired maps have been found. The first method is a search of the catalog by title, subject, or keywords. The second access point is the previously mentioned card catalog. This catalog is located in the Maps Department area and is searchable by three divisions: area, subject, and publisher. Catalog cards are grouped alphabetically within these three main divisions and provide specific information on each map such as scale, size, and geographic area covered. Most importantly, each card as well as each listing in the catalog contains a specific call number which directs the user to the actual location of the map in the collection. Signs as well as a printed diagram of the Map Department, located on the top of the card catalog, provide information on the physical arrangement of the Maps Department and the location of each collection.

The main components of the map collection are:

The Special Collections Department of Albertsons Library, located on the second floor, also contains several series of cartographic materials of a rarer and more historical nature. These series include 1:62,500 USGS 15' topographic quadrangle maps of Idaho, 1:125,000 USGS topographic quadrangle maps of the United States (pre-1945), and Geologic Atlas of the United States (1894-1945). These maps do not circulate but may be viewed in the Special Collections area during the hours of 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Copy facilities are available.
