Periodicals
The Albertsons Library periodicals collection consists primarily of scholarly journals, with a limited number of newspapers and popular magazines. Albertsons Library at Boise State University provides access to the full text of journals, magazines, and newspapers in print and electronic formats. TDNet is a directory of these materials.
Periodical titles on the Catalog show call numbers as well as the volume number and date of the first issue the Library owns and, if the title is no longer received, the volume number and date of the last issue. Holdings on microform are also listed. For the most current information about periodical holdings check the Online Catalog. The Catalog is updated daily and indicates the received dates for individual issues. It also gives the call number for bound volumes, information about missing issues and volumes at the bindery, and assigned subject headings.
Periodical publications come in a variety of formats, each of which has different housing and handling requirements.
Circulation of Periodicals
Undergraduate students may check out current and bound periodicals for 24 hours. Graduate students and faculty/staff may check out current periodicals for 2 days and bound volumes for one week. Periodicals may not be renewed. Fines are $ .50 for the first hour and $ .25 for each additional hour. There is no grace period.
Bound Volumes
As soon as is practical, the Library binds loose issues to preserve them for future use. Binding is a continuous activity requiring the temporary removal from the collection of short runs of selected titles. Once issues are cumulated into bound volumes, they are shelved in the general collection in call number order.
Unbound Periodicals
Unbound periodicals are shelved in alphabetical order in the Current Periodicals Room. Periodical titles are often listed in a different form in indexes and bibliographies than that used to arrange them on the shelves. Consult the Catalog to determine the title under which the periodical is shelved. Always ask for assistance if you are unsure of the form under which the title is shelved.
Newspapers
The newspaper collection is found on the first floor. Recent issues are housed in the Current Newspapers area. Paper copies are kept only for a limited time. Those that have research value are replaced by microfilm editions. Ask at the Circulation desk for assistance in locating recent copies of newspapers or ask in the Microform Room for copies on microfilm. Microforms and newspapers must be used in the Albertsons Library building.
