Periodicals
Albertsons Library’s periodicals and journals collection consists primarily of scholarly journals, with a limited number of newspapers and popular magazines. Albertsons Library provides access to the large majority of our periodicals and journals in online formats only. Journal titlesl can be searched or browsed by title or subject.
Periodical and journal titles in the catalog show call numbers and the volume number and date of the first issue the library owns. If the title is no longer received, the catalog shows the volume number and date of the last issue. Holdings on microform are also listed. For the most current information about periodical holdings check the Journal titlesl list.
Periodical publications come in a variety of formats, each of which has different housing and handling requirements.
Circulation of Periodicals
Undergraduate students may check out current and bound periodicals for 24 hours. Graduate students and faculty/staff may check out current periodicals for 2 days and bound volumes for one week. Periodicals may not be renewed. Fines are $.50 for the first hour and $.25 for each additional hour. There is no grace period.
Bound Volumes
As soon as is practical, the Library binds loose issues to preserve them for future use. Binding is a continuous activity requiring the temporary removal from the collection of short runs of selected titles. Once issues are cumulated into bound volumes, they are shelved in the general collection in call number order.
Unbound Periodicals
Unbound periodicals are shelved in alphabetical order in the Current Periodicals Room. Periodical titles are often listed in a different form in indexes and bibliographies than that used to arrange them on the shelves. Consult the Catalog to determine the title under which the periodical is shelved. Always ask for assistance if you are unsure of the form under which the title is shelved.
Newspapers
The newspaper collection is found on the first floor. Recent issues are housed in the Current Newspapers area. Paper copies are kept only for a limited time. Those that have research value are replaced by microfilm editions. Ask at the Circulation desk for assistance in locating recent copies of newspapers or ask Reference Desk for copies on microfilm. Microforms and newspapers must be used in the Albertsons Library building.
