Barry, J. Neilson (John Neilson), 1870-1961

Chiefly subject files on Pacific Northwest history, including research notes, maps, bibliographies, clippings, and printed matter; together with correspondence, diaries, speeches, mss. of writings, published articles, account books, biographical and genealogical material, and other papers, relating to Barry's historical research, personal affairs, ministerial responsibilities (1895-1913) in Spokane and Palouse, Wash., Charles County, Md., and Baker, Or., and his work as a probation officer (1913-1922) in Spokane, Wash. Topics of subject files include early settlers and explorers in the Pacific Northwest, Astoria, Lewis and Clark expedition, Oregon Trail, and early forts. The collection includes more than 5,000 letters to and from Barry with several hundred correspondents, who include Merrill D. Beal, Annie Laurie Bird, Frank Bond (U.S. Geographic Board), Charles H. Carey, R.C. Clark, Byron Defenbach, David C. Duniway, T.C. Elliott, W.J. Ghent, Grace Raymond Hebard, R.J. Hendricks, Merrill Jensen, C.S. Kingston, Elers Koch, Lewis A. McArthur, James McCormick, Edmond S. Meany, Robert W. Sawyer, Leslie M. Scott, and Frederic G. Young.

Gift of Mr. Barry, Portland, Or., 1957, with later additions.
