Minidoka
is not a translation,
but one of Burroughs' works with an Idaho-inspired title. A fairy
tale first discovered in 1955, it was not published until 1998, when it
was issued by Dark Horse Comics in a hardcover edition. Burroughs
wrote it on scraps of paper, including the letterhead of the Yale Dredging
Company, Minidoka, Idaho. In the introduction to the Dark Horse
edition, Robert R. Barrett speculates the tale was written to amuse his
brothers' families while they were living in Idaho. The Idaho
Burroughs describes, however, is not the same place we know today.
"Many
erstwhiles since, a portion of Idaho was ruled over by an extremely
ill-natured and wicked Brady called Pzvrtjhk." -- the
first sentence of Minidoka
