Building the West:  Mining Landscape Project collection, 1887-1998.



Field notes, tape-recorded interviews, sketches, slides, and other papers, documenting buildings, structures, architecture, and landscapes associated with mining and mining history in the Coeur d'Alene and Silver Valley regions of northern Idaho; together with photocopies of historical papers collected during the course of the project.  Includes interviews and reminiscences of labor leader Peter Piekarski, with details of labor history in the region; photocopies of scrapbooks (1960-71) of Northwest Metal Workers Auxiliary; and newsletters and strike bulletins (1953-1977) from United Steelworkers and Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers locals.


Compiled in 1995 by faculty and students from Boise State University and the University of Utah and by local researchers for the Silver Valley Solidarity Committee.  Transferred to the Special Collections Department by Professor Robert McCarl, Boise State University Anthropology Department, 2000.  Additional papers donated by Pete Piekarski.
