Glenn Balch Centennial Exhibit November 18, 2002 - March 30, 2003 Special Collections Department
Born 100 years ago on December 11, 1902, Idaho author Glenn Balch wrote stories children loved, stories about horses, dogs, ranch life, and the American West. His first published children’s story appeared in print in American Boy magazine in 1932. His first novel was published in 1937; his last in 1976. Glenn Balch's work reached an international audience, and his illustrators included Ezra Jack Keats, Robert Frankenberg, and Lorence Bjorklund. A native of Texas, Balch came to Idaho in 1925, and Idaho was his home until his death in Meridian in 1989. The Glenn Balch papers in Albertsons Library, donated to the university by his four children, contain typescripts of both published and unpublished works, business papers, photos, and rich unpublished sources of biographical information as well as many stories about Idaho. This website contains but a sample of the items on display in the Special Collections display windows on the second floor of Albertsons Library.
