Linking to articles that you have emailed to yourself

Problem:

When doing research on campus, you emailed an article to yourself. Now that you are home, you opened your email and only got a link to the article, not the full text. When you try to link to the article, you are prompted for a username and password.

Explanation:

When you visited the site from a location on campus, you were automatically considered a verified user. Now that you are at home, you are no longer considered 'authenticated'. That means that you must somehow prove to the vendor that you should have access to the article.

Solution:

You will need to reformat the url that you received in your email to include the proxy server address as part of the full address.

Directions:

1. Copy the full url from the email you received and paste into a browser address window or a text editor (whichever you prefer).
2. Highlight and copy the following string: https://libproxy.boisestate.edu/login?url=
3. Paste the string from #2 IN FRONT OF the url from your email. The resulting url should look something like this: https://libproxy.boisestate.edu/login?url=http://www.vendor.com/articles/page.pdf
(NOTE: this link is only an example, the actual links sent by database vendors will tend to be much longer. To get to the right article, make sure to include the entire url string sent by the database vendor.)
4. Enter your BroncoWeb username and password when prompted.

Explanation:

By making this adjustment to the url that the database vendor sent to you in an email, you will be utilizing the Library's proxy server to access that resource. The Library's proxy server will recognize that you are not physically on campus, and will prompt you to enter your BroncoWeb username and password to gain access to the vendor’s site. At that point, the vendor will once again recognize that you are an 'authenticated' user, and allow you access to their resources.
