Welcome to the Hollenbaugh Map Collection of Albertsons Library. The collection is named in honor of Dr. Kenneth M. Hollenbaugh, Professor of Geosciences (1968-2001) and Dean of the Graduate College (1975-2001). Dr. Hollenbaugh was an early advocate of the Library's endeavors to develop a substantial map collection and has always remained a strong supporter of both its use and growth.
The Maps Department is located in the rear northeast section of the first floor of the Library. As outlined in the Maps Collection Development Policy, the purpose of the collection is support of the instructional and research needs of the students, staff, and faculty of Boise State University. The map collection at Albertsons Library includes sheet maps (reference and thematic), monographic materials useful for reference (e.g., Idaho Geographic Names), indexes (e.g., Guide to USGS Publications and Index to Maps in Books and Periodicals), electronic information sources, relief maps, globes, and selected atlases of specific coverage (e.g., Idaho Atlas and Gazetteer). The collection also contains various materials considered useful for a more thorough understanding of the Library's map holdings and the general field of cartography. The Hollenbaugh Collection had a modest beginning in 1972 but over the years has grown at a steady pace. Currently, the collection consists of about 100,000 maps that, although worldwide in scope, emphasize materials related to Idaho and the Pacific Northwest (Oregon, Washington, and Montana). The sources for these materials are varied, ranging from private and commercial producers to state and local agencies. The largest part of the collection by sheer numbers is the 1:24,000 topographic series for all fifty states and outlying areas (Guam, Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico). Cartographic materials generated by federal governmental sources and received through the depository system are generally housed in the Government Documents area located adjacent to the Maps Department.
