Frequently Asked Questions & Interlibrary Loan Policies

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) provides Boise State faculty and graduate students with access to the specialized titles that are so essential to their research.  In addition, Interlibrary Loan supplements the Albertsons Library collection for Boise State staff and undergraduates whose projects are sufficiently long-range to await receipt of borrowed items.  However, those who have difficulty finding suitable materials within our collection often need to refine their search strategy or redefine their topic, and should ask a reference librarian for help before initiating an ILL request.

Costs ... ?

Many of the libraries we borrow from charge fees for copying, faxing, lending, postage and insurance.  As a result, Albertsons Library may pay $25 or more to obtain a single item.

Albertsons Library presently subsidizes Interlibrary Loan charges up to $50 per semester for undergraduates and $100 per semester for Faculty, Staff and Graduate Students.

How many... ?

In order to prevent a few borrowers from compromising service to all during the semester, Interlibrary Loan accepts up to twenty "active" requests per patron  for immediate processing.  As requests are received and finished ILL will allow you to submit just the number that have been completed.

Renewals?

Renewals (if allowed by the lending library) can be requested through the ILL system or by calling the Interlibrary Loan office at (208) 426-3756. Request renewals before the due date. The lending library determines the new date.

Responsibilities of the requestor ... ?

All charges resulting from damage to or loss of borrowed materials must be borne by the individual borrower.

Overdues: a $10.00 fee is charged at the 3rd notice.  If we receive an invoice from the lending library for replacement charges (usually a processing fee is also included) we will include an additional $25.00 processing fee.  All charges are placed on the library catalog which will impact future transactions until resolved.

Routine use:  because Interlibrary Loan is intended to supplement, rather than substitute for a library's own collection, both national and regional ILL codes forbid borrowing the same work over and over.  If someone needs a title over a long period, or repeatedly, other arrangements must be made
.

Use of Interlibrary Loan by groups:  those who request items are specifying that the materials are for their personal use only, otherwise, because of copyright and ILL code regulations, it is never used to obtain materials for the use of groups of people (e.g. for reserve, seminars, labs, classes or committees.)

Turn-around time...how long does it take ?

*Please plan ahead*.  Articles can take 2 days or longer to receive and books may take from 1-3 weeks to arrive.  Every effort is made to meet your "date needed by," but be aware that this deadline tells us when to stop searching.  Also note that other libraries have different schedules from ours.   Many take more frequent, or different holidays, and quite a few shut down ILL operations altogether during Spring Break or in December.

What can and cannot be borrowed ... ?

Categories considered off-limits &/or difficult to obtain through interlibrary borrowing:

Materials owned by Albertsons Library:       We do not borrow materials that are already owned by the Library.  If a book is in use, a "hold" can be placed on the item.  Contact the Circulation desk at (426-1204) concerning how to place holds or to recall a book.  They will notify you when the item is ready for use.  Check with a Reference Librarian concerning journal issues that have been sent to the bindery or books that are designated "Request Pending" or "On Order" in the Catalog.

New Books: If you need a recently published book, submit a book order request through the suggestion box in Reference, the liaison librarian for your discipline or via the web by clicking on
"Request an item for purchase".

Reference Books
:  are not usually available via ILL.  However, some libraries will copy specific articles or entries from reference books.

Rare, unwieldy or fragile books
:  This generally includes materials in special collections, manuscripts, sheet music and genealogy materials.  For the latter, ask the local genealogy library for assistance.

Idaho State Historical Society Library & Archives:   http://www.idahohistory.net/research.html

Textbooks:   Textbooks for Boise State classes are not available via ILL.  Check with the Bookstore re availability of texts.

Entire volumes or issues of periodicals:  However, you can sometimes borrow reels of newspapers on microfilm.

Non-book materials:   For videos and films see:  Albertsons Library, Curriculum Resource Center holdings located on the Library Catalog .

Note:  most libraries do not lend A-V materials (videos, DVD's, CD's, sound recordings, & etc.) and thus are difficult to obtain.

Other ILL Restrictions

Routine use:  Because ILL is intended to supplement, rather than substitute for a library's own collection, both national and regional ILL codes forbid borrowing the same work over and over.  If someone at Boise State needs a title over a long period or repeatedly, other arrangements must be made.  Often the Library buys its own copy, if available.

Use of ILL by groups:  Those who request items on ILL are stipulating that they are for their personal use only.  Any other use may constitute copyright infringement.  Because of copyright and ILL code restrictions, ILL is never used to obtain materials for the use of groups of people (e.g. for reserve, use in seminars, labs, classes or committees.)

Copyright:  Each borrower assumes responsibility for abiding by provisions of the Copyright Act ( http://www.copyright.gov/ ).  In addition, the Library's requests for photocopying must meet definitions described by copyright law and contu guidelines, which limit the number of copies of articles we can obtain from a single periodical within a single year.  To avoid copyright and royalty problems, we recommend not asking for more than a few articles from any single journal title.
